Business Challenge

Thirteen years ago, Exchequer Software, now part of the IRIS group, needed to diversify from a bespoke software development house to supply off-the-shelf business automation applications that offered their target audience of small to mid-sized enterprise users a rare combination of low-cost-of-ownership, scalability and reliability. Their challenge was to develop an accounting application that could scale from a single user to support several hundred users and provide control of mission critical functions, including sales and stock management, customer service, manufacturing and project management.

Exchequer started out developing their Enterprise product using the Pervasive.SQL 2000i predecessor, Btrieve ™, in 1990 and has continually evolved the product. Although Exchequer has always been a big fan of Pervasive, the company regularly evaluates competitive SQL databases to compare performance levels, but consistently finds Pervasive to be far superior.

Running on Windows NT, Linux and Novell, ‘Exchequer’ now the branded product of IRIS Enterprise Software is a mid-range accounting/ERP solution offering users the ultimate in reliability, speed, scalability and low-cost-of-ownership. As Pervasive is virtually maintenance-free, Exchequer’s corporate clients do not need to employ expensive database administrators.

“It’s simply a case of install and forget,” says Loigorri. “Because Pervasive enables us to use the same source code regardless of the installation size, this gives us a huge advantage over competitors, who, because they have to redevelop different product lines to suit different sized users, cannot supply applications that are as competitively priced as Exchequer.” IRIS Enterprise Software, authors of Exchequer estimates this cost savings at about 33% and passes it directly onto their customers.
